When the vow:
“I will only sell coffee less than 48 hours out of the roaster to my customers, so they may enjoy coffee at its peak of flavor. I will only use the finest organic, and pesticide-free, shade-grown beans”
is used you know you’re in for an experience.
Blue Bottle Coffee, arguably the best coffee in the United States. A shining beacon of beautiful craftsmanship, care and attention to detail amidst a brown sea of bitter, over extracted and unloved beverages. James Freeman is the mastermind behind the wildly successful craft of making Blue Bottle style coffee. A style where every cup is cared for, every bean is respected and every customer is welcome to enjoy something beautiful.
The name Blue Bottle comes from a rather interesting story from the late 1600’s involving a Viennese man by the name of Franz George Kolshitsky who was given the task of passing through the Turkish Army lines after they had overrun much of Eastern and Central Europe, to deliver a message to the Polish troops nearby. Being able to speak Turkish and Arabic, Kolshitsky took on the assignment to disguise himself as a Turkish soldier. No easy journey, Kolshitsky succeeded and with help from the Poles the Turks were repelled from Vienna leaving with them bags of a strange bean thought to be Camel feed. Kolshitsky having lived in the Arab world knew they were coffee beans and using the money bestowed upon him by the Mayor of Vienna bought the Turks’ coffee and opened Central Europe’s first coffee house named ‘The Blue Bottle’.
"319 years later" James Freeman, a freelance musician and coffee enthusiast who spent his early years roasting coffee at home using a perforated baking sheet and an oven, has created something wonderful with the appropriately named Blue Bottle Coffee. Blue Bottle has grown to a small network of cafes spread over the United States and roast coffee on two coasts.
